Facebook Blocks Google Chrome Friend Exporter Plugin

Facebook is actively trying to block Facebook Friend Exporter, a Google Chrome extension that allows you people to export their friend lists and contact info for use in other services **cough – Google+, perhaps? – cough**, so Mohamed Mansour, the extension developer, claims.

“Facebook is trying so hard to not allow you to export your friends. They started to remove emails of your friends from your profile by today July 5th 2011. (The extension) will no longer work for many people,” Mansour wrote on the Facebook Friend Exporter homepage.

It’s a pretty simple tool that lets you grab phone numbers, e-mails and other data from your Facebook friends, and directly import them into Google Contacts. The current version is now moribund, but the developer has promised to build and maintain new version that uses an alternative design.

However, CNET notes that the tool is most likely against Facebook’s Terms of Service, which states: “you will not collect users’ content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without our permission.”

With SocialSafe, all data and content that you back up is accessed through Facebook’s API, so as far as things stand at the moment, anything you do with that app is all above-board. So if you’re looking for a way to back up Facebook profiles, photos, wall posts, updates, comments, tags and likes, you know where to go.
