Facebook is continuing its expansion into most aspects of life – whether online or offline – with a movie rental platform. With most people now able to either watch TV and films on their computer, or conversely surf the web through their television set, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer to make movie rental available on a network with over 700 million users.
The latest big release on this platform is the cult classic The Big Lebowski. Set to coincide with the film’s Blu-ray release, fans on the 1998 offering from the Coen brothers is available for rental from The Big Lebowski Facebook fan page, and this is where the viewing experience takes on a social twist.
Users that rent the film are able “like” and post comments on their favourite or memorable scenes and quotes throughout the durations of film. It’s also possible to see what your other friends have said while watching the movie. Plus, users can reward up to five friends with a $1 discount on the Facebook rental. A 48-hour rental is 30 Facebook Credits ($3), which is the same amount other studios are charging for similar titles.
