Facebook Buy Instagram, SocialSafe Working On Instagram Backup

[UPDATE – Instagram Backup is now available using SocialSafe. Read more here]

The big news this week in the world of social media is that of Facebook buying Instagram for $1bn. The purchase of the photo-sharing smartphone app used by more than 30m people is said to be a combination of cash and stock options.

The announcement has prompted many users to voice concerns that their favourite app might change for the worse as a result of the takeover. However, Mark Zuckerberg did his best to allay these fears in his post on the topic on his Facebook timeline:

“We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.”

Anyone familiar with SocialSafe will know that we strongly encourage people to create copies of their own data, especially if the content is hosted by a third-party. Version 6 of SocialSafe currently backs up Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Facebook Pages and Viadeo, however we have had Instagram on our radar for some time.

Right now we’re looking at how quickly we can implement Instagram as a backed up service, meaning that you’ll soon be able to use SocialSafe to backup all of your photos, captions, likes, comments, relationships, profile information and other data associated with your Instagram accounts.

As I mentioned above, there has been a bit of a user backlash against the idea of Facebook owning the photo-sharing app, with a number of people using Twitter to voice their intention to delete their Instagram accounts. We’d encourage these people to take a moment to think before deleting any content that they have spent a great deal of time creating. We’re working hard on implementing a solution for extracting and backing up Instagram content as quickly as we can.

So whether you want to leave Instagram altogether while keeping your content, or want to create a continuous backup of all the things you post, SocialSafe will soon provide you with a solution. We’ll keep you updated on our progress with regards to backing up Instagram.
