Any of you who like fan pages for Major League Baseball teams may have seen some rather interesting posts, supposedly from those teams. It transpires that pages for the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals were hacked yesterday, and someone posted a collection humorous (and at times abusive) updates.
Some updates from the hacked MLB Facebook pages declared political allegiances for the forthcoming presidential election, others offered a free pitbull to the first 10,000 fans to arrive at the stadium, while an update from the New York Yankees was just downright weird:
Once the page admins knew what had happened they swiftly removed the erroneous updates and posted messages of apology. While it seems that no irrecoverable damage has been done, it could have been a lot worse for MLB team pages.
If whoever hacked into the pages was able to posts updates, it’s feasible that they could have done a lot more such as delete photos, posts and comments from fans – things that, once deleted, cannot be recovered.
