When was the last time you or a family member sent or received a postcard? Probably not within the last couple of years. Nowadays it’s so simple for people to let everyone else back home know how much of a great time they’re having on holiday and to even show them that beautiful tropical beach at sunset – just whip out a smartphone, take a picture and upload it to Facebook for all to see.
However, in an ironic twist of fate, the physical postcard could be making a return to your fridge door courtesy of Facebook itself. The social network is currently in the midst of testing a new Facebook Postcards feature that will allow users to send their own photos to friends in the post. Just like the traditional postcard, the front will display your selected image (although it must be one that you have uploaded, you can’t send public photos or photos from pages) and you can type a message to be printed on the reverse… Just like a normal postcard.
When it comes to adding the address you can simply enter it yourself, or if you don’t know it you can select the option to ask your friend for their address. As of yet the pricing structure hasn’t been finalised by Facebook, and the service is only currently available to a select number of Facebook users. The service is powered by Sincerely, the company behind Postagram – an app that allows users to send Instagram photos as postcards. The cost of sending a postcard with Postagram is $0.99, so you can get a rough idea of how much a Facebook postcard might set you back.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you like the idea of being able to send postcards of your photos? It certainly allows you to personalise them. Rather than sending the stock images of the Sydney Opera House or Statue of Liberty that you purchase at the tourist shops, you can actually send a photo of yourself at the landmarks, which I think is a nice touch.
