Yesterday Twitter announced a new video sharing app that “inspires creativity” by allowing users to post videos of a maximum six second duration. If you can imagine Instagram and YouTube getting drunk at a party and having an all-too-brief intimate moment, this might resemble the offspring. Except that somehow Twitter got custody of the child.
Here is what the micro blogging site had to say about Vine, its latest offering:
“We’re introducing Vine: a mobile service that lets you capture and share short looping videos. Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (6 seconds or less) inspires creativity. Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.”
Vine is a standalone app, but is also integrated with Twitter, allowing users to instantly share short videos – including sound – with their followers. You can see how Vine works in the wild by checking out this video from none other than Twitter CEO Dick Costolo.
At this point Vine is only available for iPhone and iPod touch via the Apple App Store, but Twitter has said it is currently working on releases for other platforms. However, Facebook has prevented the app from being able to find your friends on the service, and Vine videos cannot be posted directly to Facebook. This will no doubt hinder the viral spread of the app.
