We received an email today at our support address from one of our customers asking if we had any advice relating to what appears to be another Facebook scam. I haven’t seen anything like this on my news feed, so I’m guessing this particular spurious link hasn’t hit my friends and their extended networks yet. We’re going to respect our users’ privacy by not posting their email on this blog, but we can give you the specifics of the scam so you know what to look out for.
He told us that a friend had shared a video link on his wall with a comment asking him to watch it. Upon clicking this link he said he was taken to another page containing a YouTube video of a Rihanna sex tape, but instead of playing, it asks the user to share it. When he went back to Facebook he found that the video link had been posted to many of his friend’s walls, supposedly by him. Looking to clear up the mess that had been caused on his behalf, he deleted the posts ‘from him’ on his friends’ walls… only to find that all of the other posts on his wall had been deleted. Thankfully he’d recently backed up his account with SocialSafe so the posts aren’t lost forever.
So I did a little digging around this story – you have no idea how smug it makes you feel when your boss looks at your screen and sees ‘Rihanna sex tape’ in you Google search bar, only for you to prove to them categorically that it’s work related! Anyway, it turns out that the underlying mechanics of this scam are very similar to the recent Free Tesco Voucher scam. You will be provided with a set of online surveys, which you are asked to complete before you can watch the video, and even then it doesn’t work. Sometimes it may result in malware programs or other malicious files being downloaded to your computer. So if you come across this scam on Facebook, you’re best off deleting it from your news feed and reporting it to Facebook Security.
